D.C. area school closings and federal government status for Jan. 17, 2024

Posted by Valentine Belue on Tuesday, July 30, 2024

Some D.C.-area school systems are closed or opening on a two-hour delay Wednesday after 3 to 5 inches of snow fell across the region, the most since early 2022.

Temperatures tumbled into the teens Tuesday night, causing untreated wet and slushy roads to freeze in some areas. Some school districts — including in Loudoun and Montgomery counties — initially announced delays for Wednesday but later said they would close for the day.

Federal agencies are open, with the option for unscheduled leave or telework, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

Because of freezing temperatures, little snow melted Tuesday, and many neighborhood roads are still messy. Using past storms as a guide, it takes road crews about 36 to 48 hours to reach some of the more remote areas.

It seems likely that students and teachers will experience a second straight snow day in the larger counties north and west of the Beltway. For school systems inside the Beltway and to the south and east, a delay is more probable.

Throughout the region, a snow day is generally less of lock compared to Tuesday, so do your homework just in case you’re back in class!

The Office of Personnel Management surprised us by giving federal workers who do not telework the day off Tuesday, but it’s probable that they’re back at their desks Wednesday. That said, we think there’s a good chance they’ll have the option of unscheduled leave or telework, and we wouldn’t rule out a delayed opening.
