In 2013, James ran for New York City Public Advocate and won the runoff election against Daniel Squadron with 59% of the vote on October 1, 2013.
Letitia James held this job until 2018 when she announced her candidacy for Attorney General of New York in May of that year. On September 13, 2018, James won the primary election and defeated Zephyr Teachout and two other candidates with 41 per cent of the vote. On November 6, 2018, she was elected as the Attorney General of New York, defeating Kieth Wofford of the Republican Party. She took office on January 1, 2019, succeeding Barbara Underwood.
